There are so many beautiful quotes about starting today, and starting your journey, but in reality, it is so much easier said than done.
When it comes to exercise, taking that very first step is terrifying. I remember the first time I went to a gym. I was a mess. I had no idea what I was doing, knew my lack of fitness would be exposed, and thought everyone would judge me. I felt like I was going to be eaten alive.
I know I’m not alone in those feelings. Being the newbie is always difficult. But the hardest part about starting is knowing that you can’t stop if you want to reach your goals. You have to keep going, keep facing uncomfortable situations and it is not fun.
But you can do it and I’m here to help. So here are 4 things to keep in mind when you are trying to get started on your fitness journey:
1. Embrace those butterflies in your stomach. It’s a challenge but just like any other skill, it takes practice. As hard as it was, I put myself in uncomfortable situations. I kept going back to that gym and I listened, watched, and learned. I even tried new gyms and trainers so I could keep learning. Every time I go to a new gym or work out with a new trainer, I still get those butterflies, but I can push past it now.
2. Everyone starts somewhere. You have to keep telling yourself that. Imagine the instructor on their first day, I guarantee their movements were not as smooth and effortless as they are now. You can get there.
3. It’s totally normal to have an off day. Just don’t let it become an off week, or off month, or off year. No-one is 100% perfect in their healthy lifestyle every second of every day (I have a sweet tooth and love to bake, and some of the most impressive junk food eaters I’ve ever seen are trainers). The reality is that you have to look at every single day as a completely new opportunity to do take a step forward.
4. Be excited. The fitness and healthy lifestyle journey is not a punishment for past behaviour. If you stick with it you will see your goals become reality. How cool is that?
