Food is DELISH
I love food. There, I said it. I love food.
I love fettuccini alfredo, chocolate cake, chow mein, and cookies. I love it all (to an extent, I am a picky eater… lol).
You are also allowed to love food. Food is delicious. So enjoy it. But be smart about it.
I want to tell you a story. About 2 years ago I went to see a dietician. I went in there all gung-ho about changing my diet for the better. And then I got my diet plan.
It was great. I was eating more than ever before, and I was losing weight. It was awesome, until it wasn’t.
I took some liberties with the diet and had a cookie now and then, and when I was sick I ate matzah ball soup. But when my dietician looked at my food logs, she shamed me for it. She side-eyed me about the cookie and scoffed at my staple comfort food. I left, I got in my car and I cried.
After that encounter, I felt I could no longer eat what I wanted. I remember standing in the line at my neighbourhood Aroma desperately wanting a half chicken breast sandwich and lentil soup, and not feeling able to get it. Why? Because if I did, I would be over my starch limit for the day. I cried again.
No-one should cry over food. It’s not worth it. If you want something, be reasonable, have it. Your fitness goals are not made or broken by a cookie. You need to enjoy life. It is OKAY to have a treat now and then, to not be perfect.
But, that is not a free license to eat whatever you want whenever you feel like it. You should be eating healthy food the vast majority of the time. What I want you to understand is that you should never feel like you are denying yourself anything. That is not sustainable.
A sustainable diet is one you enjoy. One that nourishes you and makes you happy. So eat your lean meats, veggies, fruits, and whole grain carbs. But also eat your guilty pleasures and let’s agree, no more tears over food…unless a food is so heavenly you can’t help but weep with the delicousness, that is allowed.
